Skis, snowboards, fat bikes... all very attractive to thieves.

Fortunately, we’ve got some tips about how to protect your sports equipment from theft. Increase your chances of success and thwart thieves pronto!

Identify, always identify…

You like all your ducks in a row? Consider personalizing your equipment or even engraving your initials to set it apart and make it easily recognizable.

Write down the brand, size and serial number - if any - of every piece of your sports equipment. This information could prove to be invaluable and may even increase your chances of getting your property back.

Tips to prevent theft

No matter the time or place, being robbed is no laughing matter.

Theft of sports equipment from a home

Nobody is immune to break-ins. And when we talk about home theft, we’re talking about houses, condos, apartments, and also sheds, garages. To try to avoid this, you can:

  • lock your doors and windows
  • install a home security or monitoring system
  • keep signs of life in the home when away (vehicle in driveway, lights on timer, neighbour picking up mail, etc.)
  • stay discreet on social media

Also consider keeping your valuables away from windows. This way, they won’t be visible from outside.

Theft of sports equipment from a car

Some key tips to prevent your skates or downhill skis (or any other equipment) from being stolen from your vehicle:

  • lock your doors and roll up windows
  • store items in your trunk (if possible)
  • conceal any valuable winter accessories
  • use other security devices (alarm system, for example)
  • park your car in a well-lit, high-traffic area

The frequency of theft of all kinds has risen dramatically in recent years. So, consider implementing little things that could make the bad guys think twice and hopefully keep them away.

Theft from a luggage rack, ski rack, trunk...

Avoid leaving your sports equipment in plain sight wherever possible. If you absolutely must, make sure it is properly locked up. There’s a variety of reliable systems and devices on the market that prevent thieves from getting their way!
